Layer Security

Layer Security

Overview

FM ACCESS provides security controls for two types of layers: Global Layers managed through the Administrative panel, and Local Layers managed at the Document level.

Global Layers

  • Security settings are configured in the Administrative panel

  • Only Administrators can modify Global Layer properties, including styles (Toolset Properties)

  • Changes to Global Layer properties cannot be made locally, even by users with Edit permissions (except for the layer content on the drawing)

Local Layers

  • Created within specific Drawings

  • By default, only accessible to the layer owner

  • The layer owner retains full access rights that cannot be revoked (regardless of the permissions set)

  • Layer ownership cannot be transferred, but can be claimed by the Administrator

Permission Types

FM ACCESS supports two types of permissions for both Global and Local Layers:

  1. View Permission

    • Allows users to view the layer and its content

    • Must be explicitly granted to users or groups

  2. Edit Permission

    • Allows users to modify layer content

    • Automatically includes View permission

    • For Local Layers, also enables modification of Layer Parameters and Security settings

Permission Management

  • Permissions can be assigned to individual users or groups

  • Local Layer owners can manage permissions for their layers

  • Users with Edit rights to a Local Layer can modify permission settings

  • Permissions are assigned by selecting users or groups for each permission type

Taking Ownership of Drawing Layers

Overview

The layer ownership feature allows administrators to take control of any drawing layer in the FM ACCESS system, enabling them to manage and modify layer content as needed.

Prerequisites

To take ownership of a layer, you must have administrator privileges with the following permissions:

  • Manage Drawing Ownership

  • Manage Drawing Layer Ownership

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Open the Drawing Viewer

  2. Locate the Document Toolbar and click the Manage button

  3. In the Composite Drawing Manager window, you will see:

    • A list of Overlay layers

    • A list of Redline layers

    • All layers will be visible, regardless of your view permissions

  4. Select the desired layer

  5. Click the Take Ownership button to assume control of the layer

Results

After taking ownership, you will:

  • Become the new owner of the selected layer

  • Automatically receive View and Edit permissions for the layer

  • Have the ability to:

    • Modify layer permissions for other users

    • Remove previous owner's permissions if necessary

    • Clean or remove layer content

    • Delete the entire layer if required

This function is not applicable to global layers
